In 1980 two designer-craftsmen founded Newcastle Furniture Company on firm principles of simple and classic design. Partially supported by grants from the Crafts Council we designed and made one-off commissioned freestanding pieces featuring modern design, traditional construction methods and the highest quality craftsmanship.
Our company is now run and owned by two qualified furniture designers and one cabinet-maker (including the two founding directors). Now with showrooms in Edinburgh, Newcastle and London plus three dealerships abroad, the company’s Tyneside manufacturing base has grown considerably. However it is still very much a craft based factory with sophisticated woodworking machines feeding material to the cabinet-makers and thence to the polishing shop. In all three areas of the production process highly skilled hand work is the predominant feature.
Nowadays much more fitted furniture is made in the factory ~ particularly bespoke kitchens and bedrooms ~ but still many tables, sideboards, dressers and other freestanding items are produced. Thirty years experience of designing furniture to fit rooms of all shapes and sizes and learning how best to deal with the logistics of installation have made us masters of this particular art too.
